What To Do in the Garden

  • Plant shrubs and trees.

  • Plant garlic now.

  • Leave sunflower seed heads in place for the birds.

  • Direct sow seeds for beets, carrots, and radishes.

  • Time to plant your spring bulbs for 2021.

  • Prune back spent summer flowers now to encourage more flowers. Give geraniums a trim for more blooms.

  • Let cosmos, Nigella and calendula self-sow.

  • Harvest your herbs now before the end of fall.

  • Plant Pansies for a burst of color in the fall months.

  • Fill gaps with late-flowering perennials like sedums.

  • Cut back perennials that are done blooming.

  • Always practice effective watering by watering the soil around the base of the plants rather than the foliage.

  • Add seasonal flowering plants to sidewalks, porch, etc.

  • Collect ripe seeds from your favorite flowers.

  • Consider a fall crop of snow peas, spinach, or lettuce.

Perennials-Check out various deer-resistant perennials. Fall is a busy time of year no matter where you live. Be sure to stay in the loop to give your lawn and garden the best chance at producing a fall garden, surviving the winter, and producing in the spring. Prune your penstemons now - cut back all the old shoots to the base, provided there is new growth at the bottom of the plant. If there are no new shoots at the base, cut just above the lowest set of leaves. Easy annuals to grow from seed which provide an equally bold splash of color are Four O'clocks, Cosmos, Zinnias, nasturtiums, calendula and cornflowers. Container gardens make attractive accents to grow in the problem landscape spots.

Blueberry bushes make good companions for other species of fruiting shrubs. These include red raspberry varieties like "Heritage" which grows in USDA zones 4 through 8, and American high bush cranberry which grows in USDA zones 2 through 7. Cranberry and blueberry are native to similar moist, free-draining areas, which suit raspberries as well. The three shrubs may flower and fruit in light shade, but do best in full sun. Cranberry and blueberry complement each other with bright fall leaves.

Sweet alyssum is a flower to grow for its light fragrance; it creeps along the ground creating a carpet of beauty in white or purple. It tolerates heat and cool weather well, and has winter blooms. Petunias are wonderful, colorful perennials to plant, also. We have lovely cheerful hanging baskets for your patio and porch!

Pruning - Always deadhead your flowers to prolong the season, and add bright annuals as fall continues to winter all the while keeping your garden looking beautiful. We have a great selection of blooming perennials and annuals for every season! Visit us soon for the best selections.

Kale – It's always the perfect time to sow kale and chard. They thrive in the cool, they don't blink in the heat and they're one of the most abundant plants in your garden from the moment you plant them all the way to winter. Be sure to enjoy the nutritional plant thinning's in your salads or stir fry! Begin planning your fall vegetable garden now. Consider adding peas, chard, broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, Brussel sprouts, celery, and collards.

Cilantro loves to grow in the cooler months, in fact surviving the winter when it's sown in September or October. And it readily re-grows in the cool weather, often several times, before it bolts. Also, cilantro hates being transplanted. For a constant harvest of cilantro over the summer, sow a fresh row every 2-3 weeks and keep it well-watered. Cut back herbs to refresh growth or to harvest and dry for use later.

Garden Shrubs - It's a great time to plant trees and shrubs.

The garden center is full of wonderful, colorful choices. This is a great time to plant perennials, and select fall veggies. Check out our trees with an eye to fall color. Encourage hungry birds into your garden by investing in bird baths and bird feeders. Let some plants go to seed to self-sow and to feed the birds. Our feathered friends will keep your pest numbers down, bringing joy to the garden, often through winter. Come and see all we have to offer!
