Some seeds need to be subjected to cold treatment in the refrigerator at roughly 40°F to promote germination, called vernalization. In colder areas, this step is not necessary.

Seeds like Columbine germinate fairly quickly and can be sown outdoors midwinter or early spring after a cold spell in the refrigerator.

Sow seeds on top of a light soil mix and lightly press into the mix. Leave the pots to then sit in a pan full of water, so the mix absorbs the water from the bottom, an hour or so.

From this point, be careful the seeds never dry out as they will be forced into an ever deeper dormancy. Columbines like dappled shade or full sun.

Now is a great time to select your seeds in preparation for spring planting for beautiful flowers, herbs, or tasty vegetables next year. We have a great selection of herb, flower and vegetable seeds to choose from and all you  need to get started. Visit the garden center and see what is available to fill out your existing garden plants or to replace perennials for all seasons. Rosemary is blooming year-round, a lovely evergreen simply covered with beautiful, little lavender flowers; gaillardia, perky red blooms; white and rose cyclamen; and of course, pansies. Early summer plants like Columbine bloom in jaunty yellows, lavender spikes reach for the blue sky, and snowball shrubs have blooms that hang in perfect white globes. Fill in those bare spots in your spring gardens with some blooming annuals like primroses, and snapdragons, or bring perennial color into pots for your porches, sunrooms, or entry ways to brighten and enhance.

If your lawn needs help come spring and fall, we offer four varieties of grass seed,  Shade Blend, no Mow (for a  natural meadow look requiring low water), Bolero Plus, and 90-10. We recommend using Bolero fertilizer which is formulated by the the  sod company for our part of the country using special micro nutrients  to ensure a healthy lawn.
