Many climbing roses are once-blooming roses, producing their bloom on wood that they made in the previous year. The key here is to avoid fall/winter pruning at all costs! If you cut off any wood in the winter, you will be sacrificing all your blooms in the spring.  While these are not truly vines, their climbing canes add the same three dimensional qualities to your garden. All are very sturdy varieties and they all bloom heavily once in the spring and then bloom often throughout the growing season. Climbing roses are wonderful around your property, laden with beauties.

Try them grown together with Clematis for an outstanding combination! Give them plenty of full sun, although they also do well in sun-dappled shade, as long as they get at least six hours of full sun. Consider putting a pink lovely next to ruby red for visual impact, or scatter white roses here and there amongst the brilliant red blooms. Imagine a sunny yellow climber heading for the sky alongside your garden trellis with blue Forget-Me-Not's at her feet. Become an Artist, consider your 'backdrop' and plant for impact! Be sure and plant each with some room to breathe. Many roses do well with more shade than less in our hot summers. What is a garden without a rose, Queen of the Flowers!

Sun-dappled shady areas near roses are fantastic places to grow plants such as ferns, Love in a Mist, Columbine, and fragrant, hardy violets. They look wonderful planted with roses in a cottage-style garden setting.
