NEVER LET BAREROOT TREES DRY OUT BEFORE PLANTING!

When you get home, put your bareroot in a bucket of water to re-hydrate the roots, then plant within 24 hours

  1. Dig the planting hole large enough so the roots are not crowded when placed in the hole. Try to go at least 1 1/2 the width of the roots but only slightly deeper than height so that the ending soil is below the graft point (bud union).
  2. Mix super phosphate or rock phosphate into the hole. You can also use a controlled released fertilizer such as Whitney Farms Smart Start at this time, but be careful with fertilizer, it can damage the new sensitive roots.
  3. Mix 1/3 to 1/2 native soil with Garden and Bloom Soil Building Compost in the hole, the tree will benefit from leaving some native soil in the hole. It will make its transition into the native soil easier when it begins to grow.
  4. Trim off any broken roots, but be careful not to trim too much.
  5. Make sure your bud union is above ground.
  6. When refilling the hole, tamp the soil firmly around the roots to eliminate air pockets. Try to avoid packing very wet soil, it will destroy the soil structure, and create poor drainage.
  7. Water using Super Thrive or B1. If the trees are dormant, you should not need to water again until the trees begin to leaf. TOO MUCH WATER DURING THE DORMANT STAGE WILL REDUCE ROOT DEVELOPMENT AND POSSIBLY HARM THE TREE. As long as there is damp (not wet) soil 2" and more below the surface, the dormant tree should be fine. ***
  8. Some people prune their fruit trees by at least one third at this time. Some studies show leaving them the first year is beneficial. It is up to you.
  9. Protecting your newly planted tree from animal damage is important. This can be accomplished by screening them off with deer fencing. We also carry Liquid Fence, Deer Stopper and tree guards. It will depend on how bad your deer and rabbit problem is.
